Finused to describe an organization that is run in the interests of its members and that does not have to pay dividends to its shareholders, so surplus profits can be plowed back into the business. In the United Kingdom, building societies and friendly societies were formed as mutual organizations, although in recent years many have demutualized, either by becoming public limited companies or by being bought by other financial organizations, resulting in members receiving cash or share windfall payments. In the United States, mutual associations, a type of savings and loan association, and state-chartered mutual savings banks are organized in this way.
